A2iA: What’s in a name?
A2iA is shorthand – and an acronym of sorts – for our legal name, Artificial Intelligence and Image Analysis. As one of the pioneers in artificial intelligence applications for handwriting recognition and document management, our “full name” is reflective of our long history of developing advanced solutions for customers. Today, people know us as “A2iA” because it’s faster and easier – and descriptive of the benefits we provide to their businesses: faster, easier and more efficient data capture, document classification and information management.
A2iA is a developer of specialized and highly intelligent software tools that help end users optimize their data capture, document processing and workflow automation capabilities. A2iA’s products feature state-of-the-art and proprietary recognition technologies – including handwriting recognition, intelligent word and optical character recognition – that address our customers’ complex data extraction and document processing needs.

A2iA has been at the forefront of recognition innovation since its founding in 1991 in Paris, France by Professor Jean-Claude Simon. Professor Simon’s discoveries in handwriting and character recognition include many industry firsts and led to transformational capabilities for the global banking industry. With the introduction of a2ia CheckReader™ in 1995, banks now could capture and automate difficult to discern data, which reduced errors and improved profitability.
The strong foothold in financial services worldwide enabled further growth and expansion for the company as the North American headquarters was opened in New York, New York in 1999. Continued investment in recognition research and development produced additional products that served an even wider array of industries. a2ia FieldReader™ and a2ia DocumentReader™ were introduced in 2001 and 2005, respectively, and enabled both automatic forms processing and recognition of handwritten data records. From this point forward, virtually any business that handled large volumes of documents would be potential customers of A2iA.
In 2013, A2iA launched a2ia Mobility™, which makes image analysis and data capture available on mobile platforms such as iOS and Android.
Today, A2iA maintains the world’s largest research and development laboratory dedicated to automatic document processing that can be translated into recognition applications for business efficiency.
